Incoming President’s Report
Past District Governor Bob Huey
The 41st year. What will it bring? It will bring some changes, but any changes I make will be in line with my wish or ambition that this Club will be an example to others of Best Practice; a Club that members are both proud and happy to be a part of. I would like it to have high standards. One where members enjoy their experience at meetings, at projects and very importantly, in social settings. I believe it’s a great Club now and has been for as long as I can recall in my 23 years membership. But as with everything in life, it can do even better. The best clubs are those that focus on three keys areas – meetings, projects and social activities. There is nothing radical in my plans.
With meetings I intend to bring back a little segment we used to have called “Who Am I?” It will be followed by the Tail Twister who no doubt will make a wise judgement on the presentation. I have asked PDG Time Irvine to mount a series of talks on Lionism so that members will be better acquainted with the many aspects of our organisation and so that members do not sit there wondering what the heck is being talked about.
In the fervent hope that we can streamline business meetings, I have asked the three Vice Presidents to use email technology to get reports and other input from their members prior to a meeting but THIS MUST NOT be at the expense of members having their say. In addition to the three VP groups, I plan to have a small management group. It will be there to monitor how we are going in an overall sense. The Membership Chairman will be in that group as will the Social Director.
An innovation for our Club will be a debate on a set of policy minutes. This will be circulated in the near future. It is a document that addresses just about everything that goes on in the Club. Much of it could be said to be Motherhood; the sort of thing that we do just anyway. But there will be some points that have caused doubt in the past, and having a document will help resolve several issues. Rest assured, no such thing will be imposed on the Club. It will be up to the members to decide if they want it. As for projects, I believe we have a very good range of projects but I believe we have the capacity to do even more – not at Christmas I hope – we are always busy at the time. But in the period April/May to late October we do not do very much so let’s see if we can find some project or other for that time.
Finally, there is the important area of social activity. I am glad to see that the new committee chaired by Don Wheeler has already leapt into action with some plans for next year.
I look forward to serving as your President in 2010-2011. It is a privilege to hold that position and I guarantee my full energy to making it another very successful year.
