McCUSKER ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Districts W1 and W2 Partnership

The McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2001 to raise funds to support research undertaken by Professor Ralph Martins and his medical team in Nedlands, WA.  Prof Martins is working with other specialist Alzheimer’s teams around the world to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s.

The Foundation needs ongoing funds to continue their vital research program.

In 2008, Lions Clubs in Districts 201W1 and 201W2 commenced fundraising for the McCusker Foundation and Lion Rob Davies of Bull Creek Lions is managing the project within the W2 District. By June 2010 more than $110,000 had been raised by both Districts through fundraising events and the sale of Lady McCusker roses and rose pins.

Rose pins can be purchased from Rob Davies ($5 each). Lady McCusker Roses will be available from September.

Following a successful Alzheimer’s information seminar conducted at the Melville Civic Centre in 2009, more seminars are planned in 2010-2011. These information sessions are open to the public and provide an insight into the disease, the Foundation’s research and how the disease could be preventable.

It is vital that Lions Clubs support the Foundation’s ongoing success and research in Western Australia as this is one of the more alarming diseases to confront our society in the future.
