The annual Lions Memorial Service is held at Richard Lewis Park in Bull Creek in July to commemorate Lions members and partners who have passed. After a short service, family members plant a tree and place a plinth/plaque in the park. Fellowship and refreshments follow.

History

The City of Melville controls Richard Lewis Park, which has been maintained by the Lions Club of Bull Creek for more than 10 years. The reserve dates back to early white settlement in Perth when John Bull owned a cow farm at the nearby Bull Creek.

The idea for a Lions Memorial Park came from PDG Bill Robertson of the Lions Club of Bull Creek.

Approximately 46 Lions Clubs from W1 and W2 Districts and one UK Club are associated with the plantings. Since October 1999, 205 trees and plinths/plaques have been planted to honour the contribution made by Lions and their partners who have passed away. Names of those commemorated in 2009 and 2010 are listed at the end of this article.

The 2010 ceremony was attended by more than 100 Lions, family and friends. Plinths and trees were planted for 20 Lions or their partners including Lion Frank Mansfied of Bull Creek Lions, and Lion Gino Martatea of Brunswick Lions Club who constructed the wooden garden bench erected in the park. Photos taken on the day can be seen in the Photo Gallery on the Home page.

Thanks

Special thanks go to Lions Ron Dickinson and Rob Davies and their many helpers from Bull Creek Lions who prepared the park for the 2009 remembrance ceremony including Richard West who accompanied Lion Brian Western to busy-bees under the “Buddy scheme”. Lion Gillian Jonker’s team provides morning tea each year and the local SES erect a marquee for the refreshments.

The decorative wooden bench seat positioned on the main pathway was constructed by Lion Gino Maratea of  Lions Club of Brunswick Junction and donated by his Club in 2000. Gino passed away in 2010 and his commemorative plaque faces the garden bench.

Lions Graham Bateman (Licensed Surveyor) and Barry Sutton of the Lions Club of Mandurah have recently prepared a detailed map and list of everyone commemorated at the park. Each plinth will be numbered as per the map. These details will soon appear on our Club website.
