CLUB TWINNING

Club Twinning is an officially approved project of Lions Clubs International which encourages International relations between Lions Clubs in different parts of the World. Over the years many of these associations between clubs have developed, but since most of them have developed as a result of personal relationships between members of the clubs concerned, some have faded away over the years.

LIONS CLUB OF LONG EATON, DERBYSHIRE, ENGLAND

PDG Ron Vaughan initiated the twinning partnership through his friendship with Bob Sills from Nottingham. Ron and Bob shared a common interest in amateur radio and after Ron and wife Eileen migrated to Australia 40 years ago, their radio interest continued and was responsible for many trips between England and Western Australia. When PDG Ron joined Lions Clubs International he sought out a Lions Club close to Bill’s residence in England. Ron and Eileen have attended a number of Long Eaton meetings over the years.  Eileen has the honour of being the first female to visit the all-male Long Eaton Lions Club.

Long Eaton is situated 200 km north of London. Long Eaton Lions has 25-30 members and meets twice a month. Our two clubs stay in touch via minutes, newsletters and members’ visits.

LIONS CLUBS OF AYR & PRESTWICK, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND

In 2008, following a visit to the UK and meeting three Scottish Lions Clubs, Lions Helen Dalgleish and Rob Davies invited the Lions Club of Ayr & Prestwick to become a twinning partner. Lion Rob met Club members again in May 2009 on a subsequent trip to Scotland.

The Lions Club of Ayr & Prestwick was chartered in 1995 and currently has 21 members. Club meetings are held at  the Abbotsford Hotel in Ayr on the last Monday of each month. Ayr is a large coastal town in western Scotland, located 50 km south-west of Glasgow and 8 km south of the famous golf town of Troon.  Burns Cottage, the birth place of poet Robert Burns, is situated 3 km from Ayr in neighbouring Alloway.

We correspond frequently with the Ayr Lions via emails, minutes and Club bulletins. Editions of the West Lion magazine are also sent for their interest.

  • LIONS CLUB OF CHRISTCHURCH GARDEN CITY (NEW ZEALAND)

This twinning partnership resulted from PDG Tim Irvine’s twin, Governor Diane Barrett, being a member of the Christchurch Garden City Club. Diane has visited Bull Creek on a several times and attended a number of District 201W2 conventions. When Diane moved to the countryside outside Christchurch she transferred her membership to another club, and the twinning partnership ceased.
